Slow Gaze is an art project/state of being.
Founded in 2020 by artist Diana H. Chu, Slow Gaze reimagines modern heirlooms rooted in an artist's non-conformist spirit. Slow Gaze carries a rhythm in real time, intertwined with Diana's practice as a full-time working artist in the Midwest. Through collaborations with her artist peers, curated drops of essentialist objects, and writing Slow Guides, Diana offers a blueprint to an alternative lifestyle that she calls, 'savvy hedonism'. A whispered promise that you can have it all. The crux is to know yourself deeply and to live your values. Slowing down and gazing inwards is what allows one to indulge in pleasures that are coupled with you alone — not stories that are bought and sold to the masses — whilst exercising discernment and cultured restraint in all other areas. Slow Gaze offers a life that's omnivorous yet fluid. One that can sample extremes along the spectrums of hi-low, mainstream-niche. Yet everything here in this landscape is human-centric. Craft-forward. Small-batch. And meant to last generations... or be devoured, given away, sallied in a blink.
Diana was dedicated to becoming an artist since age five. Her B.F.A. and M.F.A. make the foundation of her obsession with drawing and costumes. Diana's introduction to industry was through art direction at a global apparel company, then later at Harley-Davidson in Milwaukee. She has worked in design and creative director roles for start-ups, including her own risograph publishing studio, since 2021. Diana's illustrations have been recognized by the Society of Illustrators (Gold Medalist), American Illustration, Creative Quarterly, CAKE (Cupcake Award Winner 2019), and published in The New York Times.
